Maths has exploded into life at Abbeys Combined School in Bletchley. A visit by Bubblz the maths clown encouraged the children to learn maths with magic and fun. The children used bubble juice to explore 3D shapes, attempted mind reading with dominoes and investigated length with balloons.

The visit from Bubblz was the highlight of the school's maths week where games, puzzles, and problem solving have been a major feature of all lessons.

Abbeys has a special week each term devoted to a specific curriculum subject. During these weeks, the children are given opportunities to explore, discover and question the world around them. The school's head teacher Mrs Burnett explains: "Maths week has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their skills and knowledge."

A fantastic time was had by all during maths week and Abbeys' children are certainly bubbly about maths!

Children at Abbeys Combined School, Bletchley, have recently been going wild about maths. A week of fun-filled and interactive lessons were planned to incorporate maths into all areas of the curriculum.

A two day visit by the Magic Maths Workshop was the highlight of the week where children were encouraged to think creatively to solve a variety of mathematical problems. Amongst other activities, children investigated square and triangular numbers, considered the Fibonacci sequence and used shapes to explore symmetry and tessellation.

One year 4 child said “I loved the maths workshop. My favourite activity was playing the times tables on the chime bars.”

Parents also had the opportunity to visit the workshop after school with their children. This proved to be a great success with several families staying for up to two hours to solve problems and complete puzzles.

Everyone had a fantastic week at the school and the enthusiasm shown by the children towards maths has been encouraging. Richard Ellam, who brought the workshop to the school, said “I have enjoyed myself immensely; the children at Abbeys are very articulate at explaining their maths thinking.”
